Senate considers Mayorkas impeachment articles

The Senate is considering the articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas after senators were sworn in as jurors in the historic trial.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer made a motion to table or kill the first impeachment article. The Senate will vote soon on that motion but it remains to be seen if Republicans will try to delay the vote.

House Republicans voted to impeach Mayorkas in February over his handling of the southern border by a narrow margin after failing on the first try. He became the first Cabinet secretary to be impeached in nearly 150 years. It is highly unlikely the Senate will vote to convict Mayorkas. Mayorkas has pushed back against the criticism and urged Congress to pass border reform ahead of the trial.

Meanwhile in the House, Speaker Mike Johnson is facing growing threats to his speakership after announcing Wednesday that he is sticking with his plan of putting a series of foreign aid bills on the floor, including funding for Ukraine.

Re: Senate considers Mayorkas impeachment articles

The Democratic-controlled Senate on Wednesday voted to kill both articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas as the historic trial of the Cabinet secretary barely got underway
