ABC News suspended "The View" host Whoopi Goldberg for two weeks tonight, one day after she drew significant criticism for falsely declaring that the Holocaust was "not about race."

"Effective immediately, I am suspending Whoopi Goldberg for two weeks for her wrong and hurtful comments," ABC News president Kim Godwin said in a statement.

"While Whoopi has apologized, I've asked her to take time to reflect and learn about the impact of her comments," Godwin added. "The entire ABC News organization stands in solidarity with our Jewish colleagues, friends, family and communities."

As Godwin said in her statement, Goldberg had in fact apologized for her remarks. On Monday night, Goldberg apologized in a note posted to Twitter. And today, Goldberg opened up "The View" offering yet another apology.

But her comments bothered staffers across ABC News. While some accepted her apology, others believed disciplinary action was warranted, according to conversations with employees.

I understand why ABC has suspended her although she apologized profusely. Bottom line is she spread false information and this network needs to lead by example. ABC can’t criticize FOX news, Joe Rogan or Alex Jones for spreading lies and then sit back and let one of their own do the same thing and do nothing. Whoopie will be back…..I’m sure. She’s a big calling card.

I listen to The View while I'm working because it's a show that I can listen to with having to look up and watch. I'm typically a few days behind because I "watch" on ABC.com they are usually a day behind. The strange thing is that they don't have Monday's show available! It skips right from Friday to Tuesday. It seems as if they pulled the show. (I'm sure I can find it on youtube...just haven't looked yet) So, I can't really comment on what Whoopi said that day. I've only seen her apologies.

Although I don't agree with her, I do understand the point she was trying to make. She wasn't denying the Holocaust, she was trying to make the point that in her eyes those that were killed were white--even though the Nazis did not see it that way. It was an ethnic cleansing, not racial. I think she didn't think through what she said and I think probably it was poorly said. (again I didn't see the show)

That being said, I don't think ABC had any choice. What she said offended many people. The ladies were just talking a few days before about free speech. We certainly have the right to free speech in this country, but one has to be aware that there are consequences to that speech. So, in this case, I certainly think Whoopi was within her rights to voice her view, but that view does come with consequences. She will be back but I do think it was the right thing to do to have her sit out for a while.

Whoopi mlss-spoke. Whoopi has issues sometimes. She gets stuck. She got stuck that day and could not get back on track. What she said was way too sensitive and there was no time to discuss her words or the understanding/misunderstanding of them.

There is NO way Whoopi is anti Semitic. I’ve listened to her over the years and she is genuine. What you see is what you get. She’s not in the category of Rogan and Jones.

I’m not sure what the suspension will accomplish. This could have been a valuable teaching opportunity that is now lost. Now people will go to their corners and never talk about the problem at hand.

The handling of the matter will simply piss people off.
W apologized all over the place. ABC reacted negatively and missed a chance to open this up for discussion.

I think Whoopi is genuinely upset about this. I saw her on Colbert and she looked like she was in shock.

Personally, I’ve been on a couple of meds here of late and I didn’t realize how much of an effect that can make on one’s behavior. My daughter had to pull me aside for a “talk”.

W is on meds, I think. She has blown up tremendously. When she was on Colbert, the first thing she said referenced her weight gain.

What a mess. They could have had a whole show about this topic.

I agree Zeke. I think doing a whole show on the topic would have been a better way to handle this. I'm not a huge fan of Whoopi's simply because I hate when she gets on her high horse about something as though her opinion is the only one--as though she alone has the facts. Again, I didn't see this show, so I don't know how it went but I suspect that was the case here. I hope the show doesn't forget this. I wish they would do more on this topic. Just a day or two before this incident they had on a woman who was a Holocaust survivor and her grandson. There aren't many survivors left and I heard something very sad today on the radio--probably in 5 years or so there won't be any left. Let's hear them now.

I totally agree...people are talking about it everywhere online...
'The View' should have just discussed it on the show to clear the air.... SUSPENDING her does nothing for this important topic!!

This is an extremely sensitive topic. Is it better to air it or keep it buried?

Blacks and Jews have an interesting alliance....good and bad. Mostly good, I think.

But there are too many comparisons between the Holocaust and Slavery in America. It’s like comparing apples to oranges and the sooner that comparison stops the better. THEY ARE NOT THE SAME. This claim that one group was more victimized than the other does nothing to move the dial forward. Stop it!

Work together to ensure anti semitism and anti blackness in America goes away.

The handling of this incident does nothing but make people separate and dig in their heels.

Bad move ABC. Bad move.

I finally saw Monday's show. As I suspected, Whoopi spoke her "facts" and shut down the conversation so the other host's didn't have an opportunity to respond. I agree with her that the Holocaust was about man's inhumanity to man, but she needs to see that it WAS about race. The Nazis wanted to eliminate not just the Jews but all "inferior races." I wish they would do a whole week on this

Yes, I think so too. Whoopi should be allowed to explain her feelings and statement.....not shut down and punished like a child. It's a bit of an insult, really. The way this was handled is adding fuel to the fire.

ABC needs to bring back W and clean this up.

I don't think the other hosts are too happy about this either. They all looked pissed today.

Elisabeth Hasselbeck is set to cohost…..don’t know when tho’. Should be interesting. We need Whoopie back. She is missed.

I haven't watched the show since Whoopi left....I will only watch again when and (if) she returns.

I couldn't stand E. Hasselbeck....hoping she's on before Whoopi returns....so I don't have to see or hear her screeching mouth...

I would love to see Nicole Wallace and Michelle Collins come back to guest co-host. I sometimes listen to Michelle's show on SiriusXM. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed her sense of humor. She's in Europe now, so maybe she won't be on.

Hmmmm. The future for the show for me is iffy. If Whoopi doesn’t return I won’t watch. It’s doubtful I will watch if EH returns to cohost.

She started her two two-week suspension on 1 Feb so it is believed she could return to the show this Monday or Tuesday although the network has not officially confirmed a return date.

She issued several public apologies over her comments, where she claimed that the Holocaust, which saw over six million Jews across German-occupied Europe systematically murdered, was "not about race".

In a statement posted on Twitter the same day, she said: "On today's show I said the Holocaust 'is not about race, but about man's inhumanity to man'. I should have said it is about both."

I feel that since the show is called 'The View' everyone should be able to express their
View
