Senate votes on border bill and foreign aid package

  • The Senate is holding an initial procedural vote this afternoon on a $118 billion bipartisan border deal that would dramatically change immigration law, as well as a foreign aid package for Ukraine and Israel.
  •
  •
  • Senate GOP is set to tank it: The bill is on track to fail, as GOP infighting threatens to steamroll any congressional response to the border and put foreign aid in jeopardy. Republicans demanded border security be in the bill but are now rejecting it after pressure from Donald Trump, who is making the border a campaign issue.
  •
  •
  • Standalone package: Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said he thinks a foreign aid package deal stripped of border policy changes would get enough bipartisan support to move forward in a vote Wednesday if the original bill fails.
  •
  •
  • What is happening in the House: The Senate vote comes a day after the House failed to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, a stunning blow to House Republicans who had pushed the effort as a key political goal. A GOP-led standalone Israel aid bill also failed in the House

Re: Senate votes on border bill and foreign aid package

Senate Republicans blocked the  major bipartisan border deal and foreign aid package with assistance for Ukraine and Israel in a key vote on Wednesday amid a torrent of attacks on the bill by former President Donald rump and top House Republicans.
