Louisiana May Look Like Katrina, But The Fema Response Does Not

The scale of the disaster is hard to comprehend. And while the incredible deluge in Louisiana came without the punishing winds of a hurricane, the flooded streets and submerged houses look all too similar to the levee failures in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

However, there's a big difference in the FEMA response.Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards says he's not concerned that President Barack Obama has not yet visited Louisiana to see the flood crisis first-hand.

"I'm not complaining in any way about our federal partnership," Edwards said during a news conference on Thursday.

President Obama is not there, causing the kind of traffic jams and security requirements a presidential visit brings. Those requirements could ground helicopters and block roads still urgently needed in search and rescue activity. Instead, the head of Homeland Security and Federal Emergency Management Agency head Craig Fugate are on the ground.

"This is not your 2005 FEMA,” said Commissioner of Administration Jay Dardenne. “They have been much more responsive.”

Senate President John Alario, a Westwego Republican who traveled with Edwards and FEMA leaders earlier this week to flood-struck areas, agreed.

“FEMA has been around since the first drop of rain hit the ground,” he said. “Whether the president is here or not, we’re getting a lot more help from the federal government."

FEMA plans to have hundreds of inspectors on the ground within the next few days, working to help people return to their homes as quickly as possible.

Re: Louisiana May Look Like Katrina, But The Fema Response Does Not

This is a tough call for any politician. Do you go to a disaster area to offer support, or stay away to allow workers to do their job?

LA Times:Obama himself is facing criticism for not cutting short his annual summer vacation to visit the flood devastation in Louisiana, but the governor, Democrat John Bel Edwards, has publicly asked Obama to stay away, citing the drain on resources that a presidential visit demands and that he would prefer to devote to flood relief.

Edwards' request may have contributed to the Trump campaign keeping the visit by the candidate him and running mate Mike Pence relatively quiet. The campaign has publicly released no details, and Edwards' office said that as of Thursday night, Trump hadn't called to say he was headed to the state.

"We welcome him to [Louisiana] but not for a photo-op," an Edwards spokesman said in a statement. The governor's office suggested Trump donate to flood relief instead.

Update: Trump went and it was indeed nithing but a photo-op and an opportunity to bash Obama .

Louisiana is dealing with enough hardship....it takes an enormous toll on any area that the President visits..It was decided by the LA officials that what they need now MORE than a visit from anyone, is Federal assistance and money to help with the rebuilding process.

The President will visit on Tuesday, per a White house statement, and NO he won't be handing out "Play doh"
