Trump's Carrier Deal

Pressured By Trump, Carrier Will Keep Jobs Here In The USA.
Pretty impressive, no?
Too bad (like everything else Trump says) it's a lie.
Yes, Carrier may be keeping a measly number of jobs in the US,but it had nothing to do with being pressured by Trump; quite the opposite is true.

United Technologies – Carrier’s parent company – was basically bribed with taxpayer dollars to keep a few hundred jobs in Indiana – and it had nothing to do with Trump himself.

According to CNBC, “There were new incentives on offer from the state of Indiana, where Pence is governor, that helped clear a path for the agreement.”

In other words, Pence served up a massive, taxpayer-funded handout to the company in order to score a short-term PR win. Trump will claim victory on Thursday when, really, it was a state-funded handout that convinced Carrier to keep some of its employees in the state.

The deal also represents a huge departure from Trump’s campaign-season rhetoric, when he repeatedly promised to take a tough stance on companies, specifically Carrier which Trump promised to penalize with a 35 percent tariff if they moved operations to Mexico.Trump and Pence allowed the company to blackmail the Indiana government in order to have a nice photo-op.

Trump claims that the Carrier deal is saving 1,000 jobs, for the record it is only saving 800, but for the sake of simplicity and consistency, we’ll use Trump’s number of 1,000.

Obama’s economic policy created 178 Trump Carrier deals in a month, with the cost to taxpayers of $0, compared to the cost to Indiana taxpayers of $7 million for Trump’s deal.

Today it was announced:
The Obama recovery surged by adding 178,000 new private sector jobs in November. This is the equivalent of 178 Trump deals with Carrier at zero cost to taxpayers.

Re: Trump's Carrier Deal

The New York Times editorial board and its debunking of Donald Trump’s lie that he “saved” American jobs:
Carrier still intends to send 1,300 jobs to Mexico (Mr. Trump said Thursday that more than 1,100 jobs will be saved, but that includes 300 positions that never were scheduled to leave the country). Over all, factory employment in Indiana is down by more than 20 percent since 2000; nationwide, it is down by nearly 30 percent. Stopping the outsourcing of jobs is a worthy goal, but it does not address the underlying trends in technology and public policy that are behind the demise of blue-collar jobs.It would be naïve to believe that United Technologies — which had estimated it would save $65 million a year by moving the Carrier jobs to Mexico — would give in to Mr. Trump without an expectation of something in return. The State of Indiana has reportedly offered the company $7 million in tax breaks over 10 years to keep the jobs in the state. In addition, Mr. Trump is expected to ease up on his campaign pledge to slap a 35 percent tariff on Carrier air-conditioners imported from Mexico, a nice concession, given that Carrier will still be outsourcing more jobs than it is retaining in the deal.
