dog dies in overhead compartment...

on United flight.  The flight attendant insisted the owner put the dog carrier in the overhead compartment and the dog died.  Has anyone seen what the carrier looked like?  I just can't understand this story.  First, it must have been a very well behaved dog to not make any noise, and second, the attendant says she didn't know there was a dog in the carrier.  Every dog carrier I've seen has a screen of some kind or bars so the animal can breathe.  Couldn't she see the dog??

Re: dog dies in overhead compartment...

I didn't see the carrier it was in, but this is so sad....

This is what I read online

"Eventually, the pet owner, whom United declined to name, complied with the flight attendant. Ms. Gremminger said the owner was preoccupied by her infant during the flight and did not check on the pet, which fell eerily silent after barking during takeoff and as the plane ascended to its cruising altitude."

"Putting animals in the overhead compartment is against the airline’s policies, which say pets are required to travel in carriers that “must fit completely under the seat in front of the customer and remain there at all times.” United said it was investigating who had put the dog in the overhead compartment and why."

Re: dog dies in overhead compartment...

Already under scrutiny about a dog dying in an overhead bin and another dog being accidentally sent to Japan, United Airlines on Friday acknowledged its third animal-related mistake in a week.

A flight was diverted to Akron, Ohio, on Thursday after the airline realized a pet had been loaded onto the flight in error, airline spokeswoman Maggie Schmerin told CNN.

Flight 3996 was carrying 33 passengers from Newark, New Jersey, to St. Louis, but the pet was due to fly from New Jersey to Akron.

United told CNN the unidentified animal was "safely delivered to its owner."United said it offered compensation to all passengers as a result of the diversion. The airline declined to provide details about the compensation.
