gray squirrels

Has anyone else noticed a whole lot of gray squirrels around?  When we took a little trip over the weekend, we must have seen twenty of them either crossing the road, or dead on the road from trying to cross.  Even here in town there are a few dead ones.  I've never seen so many running around, it was totally Alfred Hitchcock strange.  We've actually only had gray squirrels here in town for a few years now, we only had red squirrels before, now the few we have are ending up flattened.  They are so pretty, it's sad to see.

Re: gray squirrels

Funny teluog....squirrel migration. Years ago there were only grey squirrels in the suburbs of NYC...northern.
But now there are black squirrels within the last 15 years or so. And they are beautiful. Pitch black.
My daughter and I were just talking about squirrels because their behaviors are easy to observe. Just sit in your car quietly and watch them. They play a lot and right now they are scrambling to gather nuts for the cold weather.
We don't yet have red squirrels....I saw a brown squirrel in NYC. and I saw a white squirrel in Wash, DC.
Fascinating.

I grew up on the Ontario Quebec border and all I ever saw was black squirrels. I'm not sure why that is.....I think they were brought here from Europe, and now I have to look that up.They're bigger than the cute little gray ones. I suppose they've migrated to where you were. I makes sense that they would end up in NY state from southern Canada eh! Were they wearing toques on their little heads?(LOL)!!!!!!!

Re: gray squirrels

But actually the black squirrels were plentiful in the southern part of the county, just outside NYC. They weren't in the northern part of the county (which is closer to Canada). And in the beginning they seemed smaller than the grey ones and now they are fat and pudgy.
Maybe they traveled by ship directly from Europe into NYC. What's the story on teluog's red squirrels? They must be gorgeous.
And just an aside, there are many odd animals recently spotted in the NYC suburbs.....bears, bobcats, coyotes, and the other day I was told there had been a couple of isolated spottings of mountain lions in CT.
