Should we have a National Holiday to vote?

The Democrat's first new bill of the 116th Congress is a proposal that would make election day a federal holiday and institute automatic voter registration, along with other reforms.  Rep. Elijah Cummings called the bill "one of the boldest reform packages to be considered in our history, clean up government, fight secret money in politics and make it easier for American citizens across this great country to vote."  The Republicans aren't in favor, of course, they're not interested in making it easier for people to vote, they've called it a "power grab" by Democrats.  Letting Americans exercise their right to vote and making it easier for them to do so, is considered a "power grab,"  at least they're smart enough to know the majority of people don't support them.

Re: Should we have a National Holiday to vote?

years ago I used to get 1/2 day off for presidential elections.  Staff was divided in half and half had afternoon off, half had morning.  I think we should either move election day to saturday or make it a holiday.  Traditionally, polling places here have been in schools.  But now parents, teachers and administrators are concerned with safety.  Holding elections when schools are closed would solved the problem.  And having election day as a holiday would make it much easier for people to vote.  Many people really have a hard time getting to the polls during the week

Yes....even if not a holiday, 1/2 day off or something. Flexibility, at least. For people who have to travel a long distance to vote, provisions for the opportunity to vote should be made.
