Allergy caused by ticks

There is actually a tick called the lone star tick that if it bites you, it can trigger a deadly red meat allergy.  East coast states are the hardest hit, Virginia, North Carolina and New York with some 1500 cases of this allergy in the US.  This allergy can be fatal and it creates a delayed anaphylactic response.  This newly discovered allergy is to a sugar found in the flesh of almost all non-primate animals.  The scientists who discovered this meat allergy in 2009 say there is no cure and the only treatment is to give up red meat.  Author John Grisham suffered for 3 years until he discovered it was a meat allergy, after a tick bite received at his plantation in Charlottesville.  These ticks are not the same as those who carry Lyme disease.  Wow, we need some way to get rid of these disease carrying bugs that are ruining peoples' lives.

Re: Allergy caused by ticks

I heard about this a year or so ago.  It scares the crap outta me.  On the other hand, if I can't eat red meat I guess I'd be healthier.
