Re: Resource Officer who threw student to the ground

He never tried to put her in a choke hold. He reached around to take her hand out from under her chin and then that is when she went off and started punching him.  The officer warned her that if she didn't get up and leave the room he would remove her.  He attempted to do that and she became combative.  Look, when you force a law enforcement officer to take you down it isn't going to be gentle.

I guess we'll agree to disagree. I don't think the law enforcement officer was forced to take her down. I think he made a poor decision and did not attempt to diffuse the situation. I am glad that he was fired for losing control, and hopefully things will change going forward. He certainly didn't follow any training procedures when he dragged her across the room, so his judgement was clearly lacking and that's why he lost his job. I don't think they called him "Officer Slam" for no reason. Now that he's been removed I hope they reassess the training for dealing with students in crisis like this so that it never happens to another child.

Re: Resource Officer who threw student to the ground

Like I said he should have gone about removing her from the room differently.  Maybe this will lead them to develop some protocol for situations like this.  It can and should be handled differently.  Back up should be brought in to facilitate the removal.  A student refusing to do what she was told to do should never be tolerated or allowed.  Teachers, administrators, and law enforcement must maintain their authority.  I agree to disagree shiny. Good discussion.
