Officer's death ruled suicide

After months of treating the death of a popular cop who died while on patrol in a quiet town north of Chicago as as a homicide, investigators are set to reverse course in Wednesday and announce that they believe Fox Lake, Ill. police officer  Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz's death was, in fact, a suicide.

The Lake County Sheriff's Department will announced the death of Gliniewicz, whose Sept. 1 death spurred a massive manhunt along the Illinois-Wisconsin border, died of self-inflicted gunshot wounds, Fox 32 Chicago and WLS-TV report.

Both outlets cited anonymous sources as saying that the death would be ruled a suicide .The sheriff's department said in a statement that they would announce "conclusive results of the investigation" on Wednesday morning, but declined to comment on the reports. Authorities scheduled at 10 a.m. CT news conference to announce their findings.

The officer was out on patrol when he radio'd for back up and claimed to be on a foot pursuit after 3 suspects. Responding officers found his body. He had suffered from two gunshot wounds to the torso area.

Re: Officer's death ruled suicide

I can not for the life of me think of a single person that I have ever met, that has ever been
around the block, who has seen or heard of GSW cases, that would ever attempt suicide
by shooting themselves in the torso. If a person is willing to commit suicide with a gun, the
bullet location of choice, for a quick and instantaneous response is in the head, not the torso.

Are the authorities really serious about this? And then for there to be two wounds? Really?
Please tell me they don't truly think the general public is that stupid.

It is a very unusual case but the police seem resigned to the evidence. I guess we'll have to wait and see what the evidence is, but I have heard of stranger things.

Re: Officer's death ruled suicide

According to Lake County Major Crimes Task Force commander George Filenko "This staged suicide was the end result of extensive criminal acts that Gliniewicz had been committing."

Gliniewicz was under increasing levels of stress from scrutiny into what the investigators found to be criminal activity, Filenko said. The officer had been stealing and laundering money from the police department program that mentored young people hoping to become law enforcement officers, Filenko said. Gliniewic was a leader in that program, and had been stealing money for at least seven years, he said. The investigation found that the officer -- who had experience creating mock crime scenes -- staged his suicide to make it look like a homicide.

Thanks Spunky. That certainly goes to motive. I also read that suicide would have left his widow without a pension, so he might have been thinking of his wife and family when/if he cooked this up. It's a shame that so much time, resource and energy was wasted in the pursuit of suspects that may not have ever existed.

Re: Officer's death ruled suicide

My initial thought was insurance & pension remain intact if its murder-not so much if its suicide.

Re: Officer's death ruled suicide

Way back when it happened and they couldn't find anything to confirm the officers story I suspected it was a suicide.  I figured he must have been experiencing a midlife crisis as he was getting ready to retire. His whole identity was wrapped up in being this beloved cop.  Never guessed he was embezzling money though.  LIfe insurance does not pay out for suicide which is why I thought the cop set it up to look like he was killed.

ITA Mama. It sounds like he was very well respected and had once been the example of a great police officer. But maybe the money just was too tempting, or maybe he had other reasons for allegedly stealing it. In any event he got in over his head and must have been living a tormented life before this happened.

His widow still believes he was murdered. I saw her sobbing on tv and my heart just broke for her.
