President Biden said his administration still does not yet know "exactly" what the recent downed objects over North American airspace were — but nothing suggests they are related to the Chinese balloon program or surveillance program.
The intelligence community's assessment is that the objects were most likely balloons tied to private institutions or research, Biden said.
Three unidentified objects were taken down by the US over the weekend — one in Alaskan airspace Friday, another over northern Canada on Saturday and a third object over Lake Huron on Sunday. It comes after a Chinese surveillance balloon was taken down by US fighter jets off the coast of South Carolina on February 4.
