The presidential nomination in the US is one of the most complex, lengthy and expensive in the world. At stake in the primary or caucus is a certain number of delegates. Delegates are determined state by state. The candidate who accumulates a majority of his or her party's delegates wins the nomination. A contested convention happens when none of the candidates reach the minimum delegate count to win their party nomination. This year there will likely be a republican contested convention. Some suggest there may be a democrat contested convention but imo I doubt it.
So, here is the question. Is the delegate process effective and if so should the rules change? Does this process discourage voters and do we need it?
Thoughts?

I think it is too expensive and too drawn out. I doubt it is any more effective than other democracies.

All I know about the delegate counts are the number of delegates allocated to each party.
For instance: The DEMOCRATS need 2,383 delegates.
So far, HC has 1,758 BS has 1076 and there are 158 delegates uncommitted
The Republicans need 1,237
DT has 744, TC has 559, Kasich has 144, Rubio has 171 Uncommitted 57.
The others that ran and have since dropped out also have some delegates.
The nomination is usually given to the person that reaches the magic number, or is closest to it.
The Republicans are looking at a contested convention, whereby someone will be nominated to run against the democrats, and it doesn't have to be those currently running.
As an independent, I am having a very hard time deciding who to vote for...I hate the nastiness and bigotry and the outright lies...

I think all the primaries should be held on the same day. The primary process takes entirely too long. I think that there are candidates that are eliminated early on that would get votes in the states that vote later. so the states that have the earliest primaries have the greatest influence.

The process is entirely way too drawn out. This isn't horse & buggy days. Candidates have so many options to instantly put forth their platform. Why do they need to go from state to state spouting the same stuff just packaged differently depending on the city? Add the cost & it becomes beyond absurd. How can we as a country accept this type of spending from ppl who want to be in control of ours?
The delegate process is useless IMO. I really believe the repubs will have a contested convention. I would be surprised if the Dems do, but the way this election is going who knows.

I think you are right Vantro. The question is, how can we change this. This primary has put the delegate process under the microscope which is a good thing. It would behoove us all to ask our legislators to revisit this.

I'll never understand why the election process has to be so complicated.
The whole thing goes on entirely too long.
(Does anyone know why this particular election cycle started so early and who's responsible?)
IMO, Citizens United has got to go.
No matter what your party affiliation, most sensible people would agree, the amount of money being spent on elections is obscene.
I'm proud to say, I never contributed one dime to anyone's campaign.
If I believe in a candidate, my vote is my contribution.
