The Obamas On The Campaign Trail

Bill Matthews:Michelle Obama said in a speech that she wakes up every morning in a house that was built by slaves. Speaks to their mentality.

She's right.

Construction on the President's House began in 1792 in Washington, D.C., a new capital situated in sparsely settled region far from a major population center.

The decision to place the capital on land ceded by two slave states-Virginia and Maryland-ultimately influenced the acquisition of laborers to construct its public buildings. The D.C. commissioners, charged by Congress with building the new city under the direction of the president, initially planned to import workers from Europe to meet their labor needs.

However, response to recruitment was dismal and soon they turned to African American—enslaved and free—to provide the bulk of labor that built the White House, the United States Capitol, and other early government buildings.

Trump wakes up everyday in Trump Tower, the crown jewel of the real-estate mogul's empire, built by 150-odd Polish immigrants — most working illegally, some without full pay.

"It's constructed on the blood, sweat and tears of the Polish Brigade, as they were known in the industry," said attorney Wendy Sloan, who sued Trump and his contractor for union pension violations on the project. In an interview with NBC News,Trump blamed the problems on a "bad contractor" and said he had been "exonerated" by the courts.

"I didn't do anything wrong," he said. "I wouldn't do anything different."Trump has said he did not know the workers' legal status at the time and no court has ever found that Trump Equitable, the development company, was responsible for paying them.

But the tangled history of the project still could raise questions about the business practices of the man now leading the Republican pack.

Shows his mentality and lack of conscience.

Re: The Obamas On The Campaign Trail

Trump launched his campaign from the marbled skyscraper that bears his name in June, pledging to build a wall along the southern border to stem illegal immigration.
Thirty-five years earlier, a group of undocumented Polish immigrants had stood on that very site, refusing to continue dangerous demolition work they had been doing around the clock for months.

I totally agree prince.

Former president George W. Bush reaffirmed his support of Mitt Romney on Tuesday, saying he would be a "great president" if elected.

"President Bush is an enthusiastic supporter of the Romney-Ryan ticket," said Bush spokesman Freddy Ford.Ford disputed a New York magazine story -- a Jeb Bush profile we reported on Monday -- that said in part that George W. Bush has been critical of Romney's campaign and skeptical of his chances.

Not so, says Ford: Bush is "confident Mitt Romney is going to be a great president for America."Last edited by DollyLongstaff (Today 8:40 pm)

October 29, 2012 6:00 pmFormer first lady Laura Bush made a rare – albeit brief – return to the presidential campaign trail Sunday, telling a crowd in suburban Detroit that “Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan have better answers” on the economy and foreign policy.“They will go to work the minute they are inaugurated to make sure we can face the challenges that we have,” she said in a five-minute speech at a volunteer appreciation event in Livonia, Mich.

Laura Bush has been a bit more public in her support of Romney lately, last month attending a Romney fundraiser in Oklahoma City and hosting a fundraiser with Ann Romney at the Bushes’ Preston Hollow home.

Bush told The Dallas Morning News on Monday that she happened to be in Michigan for a different speech Sunday night and that he she was happy to help “thank the lovely ladies of Livonia” for the phone calls they’ve been making on Romney’s behalf.

Re: The Obamas On The Campaign Trail

Interesting side note:
President Obama's approval ratings have put him in a very unique position.

In the past, lame duck presidents have been inhibited from campaigning too much, either because of low approval ratings or friction with their party's nominees.

Presidents with low approval ratings — like George W. Bush in 2008 and Lyndon Johnson in 1968 — were liabilities for the party candidates seeking to succeed them (John McCain and Hubert Humphrey).

Obama doesn't appear to have historic handicaps as he hits the campaign trail in his lame duck year. His approval ratings have inched above 50%, and both Clinton and Bernie Sanders have made clear they would welcome the president's support.

Re: The Obamas On The Campaign Trail

Of course they don't think it is appropriate for Obama to campaign. Like so many other things, it was never a problem with other POTUS, but Now it is. Go figure...some things never change.
