This is so freakin awesome
Trending now #holdthefloor and #filibuster
Senator Chris Murphy from CT started this and its still going hour 6Senate Democrats say they are bringing Senate business to a halt in an effort to force some action on gun control.Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut said on Twitter that he was prepared to "talk about the need to prevent gun violence for as long as I can."NPR's Muthoni Muturi tells us that fellow Democrats have joined Murphy and are now signing up for speaking slots as late as 10:30 p.m. ET. That means this delay may go on for a while.
Specifically, Democrats are pushing bills that institute universal background checks and bar suspected terrorists from buying guns.

The @NRA is upset about the Democratic #filibuster for sensible gun law reform. I say we offer them our thoughts and prayers.

Finally! This is what I read in the NY Times this morning.
"Shortly before 2 a.m., Mr. Murphy announced on Twitter that he had achieved what he set out to do: win commitments from Republican leaders that they would hold votes on the gun control measures he wanted. He thanked those who had supported him in phone calls, Twitter posts and emails. About 20 minutes later, the filibuster ended at 2:11 a.m."
Wow! This Senator Murphy is great!
Thanks NE for starting this thread and keeping us informed!

I wish the Dems had done this a looong time ago.

There is a reason I have never registered as a dem & that is because they too have an agenda with big business. However they are nothing compared to repubs, but they also owe ppl. I also believe that they tend to somewhat play by the rules slightly better, even though repubs play as dirty as they can. Dems need to step up their game a bit. Repubs will always get their way if Dems do not play then same game. Look at the supreme Court fiasco. Ppl just let conserve get away with all kinds of stuff. Look where it has gotten them & the rest of America, we have Trump as a true contender.

Totally agree. While I am voting for Hillary, I am far from a fan. So I think you are right re: Dems vs Repubs. I am just so sick of politicians who wait to see which way the wind is blowing before they make a move or a decision.
The gun issue is a no-brainer in my opinion....pass the damn laws. Yet "they" wait until masses of people die before "they" can see the logic? or speak out about it?

Well, the elected senators are now going to vote on Monday on the amendments. Dems will probably lose again

I guess we will know after the vote...don't trust any of them....been waiting too long for something to happen....

Sadly, imo none of the gun control bills will pass the senate. The dems can filibuster all they want but they are the minority in the senate and carry very little weight.
Pay attention folks! Let this be a lesson learned (again) and get out and vote. Overcome the partisan gridlock if you really want to solve this problem by voting and reaching out to legislators. There seems to be a lot of support in favor of passing these bills but how many of us actually reached out to our legislators asking them to support these bills? There is power in your voice and vote, exercise it.
