I need some advice.

I walk around my small city for exercise and have encountered a constant annoyance.  There are areas where people let their shrubbery grow uncontrolled and they are obstructing the sidewalks. Also, there are trees that have branches hanging so low over the sidewalk that they touch my head and some hang even lower. I am only 5ft.3 inches tall so this also gets in the way when trying to walk on the sidewalks. When I first started walking in the spring I thought ok warm season is just starting so give people a chance to get out and do their yard work. Now 2-3 months later nothing has changed. Yesterday I decided to post a rant about it on our cities Rant and Rage page. I mentioned that I am going to notify the city so they can deal with it.  Now I have people shaming me saying I should go knock on these peoples doors and nicely asking them to cut their shrubbery or tree branches instead of going to the city.  I am not comfortable doing this as I don't know the people and I have no authority to be asking anyone to cut their shrubs or tree branches. You never know how people will react and I don't want to put myself in a bad situation.  So my question is, am I wrong?  What do you think I should do?

Re: I need some advice.

ummm I would not go door to door. I would notify the city with specific addresses. That is a zoning violation and safety issue for the city. You are entitled to safe passage on a public street.
As far as people shaming you? That is the internets favorite hobby. Pay it no mind. If it isn't you, then its somebody else they all jump on. They will go away when they find their next "victim"

Re: I need some advice.

Thanks NESunrise.  I just hate the idea of getting anyone in trouble and that really isn't my goal. I just want to get the issue taken care of. You are right. They will get over it and move on.  The city will just send them letters warning them to cut their branches or shrubbery or they will come do it and put the cost on their property bills. I really think that is the better way to go.

Re: I need some advice.

Great advice, NES.

Confronting people, even nicely rarely works out well, in my experience.

Good luck need.

Re: I need some advice.

Thanks Sam. I agree that the likelihood that it will not end well if I tried to talk to these people is too great. I am much more comfortable letting the city take care of it. They have the authority to and it is really their place not mine.

This was great advice Need.

And they never disclose the person's name that issued the complaint....you can remind them of that.

Re: I need some advice.

I would certainly not go to the door.  You don't know how these people will take the "intrusion."    I would just go directly to the city office that would handle this.  It's not big deal.  They'll get a letter.  It happened to me.  I live on a corner and didn't know that my tree branches were blocking the stop sign on the side street.  It's a dead end (or "no outlet" and they are now politically correctly called) so there was no reason for me to be on that street.  I took care of trimming the trees and that was the end of it.  Sidewalks should be safe.  There are probably rules about what a safe sidewalk is in your city.

I would not go door to door because you don't know how what people will do or say, I would do just what you said,  call the city and have them take care of it. I really don't trust people I don't know.

Ppl are amazing, but not always in a good way.
