Re: Cheeky Cockatoo!

LOL! That was hilarious! If I heard that from outside I'd think it was a couple fighting. Do you have a cockatoo V?

I do. She is as sweet as can be. She was rescued from a hoarder who had over 150 birds. She doesn't talk much, because she is still getting over some of her insecurities. She wasn't very tame when I got her. She now dances, steps up, kisses & helps make breakfast. We had a set back after Tripper passed, but she is slowly getting back on track. She was cranky for a bit, but now follows me everywhere. Curious, sweet, but insecure. Work in progress.

Re: Cheeky Cockatoo!

Is she the one who used to pull out her feathers when she was stressed? I think her name started with an A? I might be remembing that wrong.

Does your cockatoo talk? Anyone who thinks animals don't mourn hasn't been around enough animals. Glad she's coming around. Do you find that she's hanging around you more now? Do you have other birds?

Sorry for all the questions but I am fascinated by birds. I have so many feeders in my yard that it takes me about half an hour to fill them all. I have been trying to attract crows because I just think they are amazing and brilliant.

I had a budgie named Doogie when I was a kid and I really loved him. He used to sit on my shoulder when I ate breakfast and I'd feed him Cheerios. When I came downstairs to watch tv he'd chirp and flap until I let him out, then he'd sit on my arm or my shoulder for hours. My mom used to get annoyed because there would be bird poop on the couch.

I'd love to get another bird but I always hesitate because I don't know a lot about them. I don't know anyone with birds and I wouldn't even know what breed to start out with. I also wanted to wait until my kids were old enough to be gentle and appreciate a bird. I guess I should look into rescues? Any suggestions where to start?

Re: Cheeky Cockatoo!

Her name has changed several times. Tripper use to say hi & call her bobo, which was his nickname lol. Those are the only words Trip would say. So now she thinks her name is Boobo. I am not fond of it, but she seems to want that as her name. I preferred her godess names, Artemis, Rhiannon or Arianrhod. She ignores all those names & a few others.

She is getting more attached. She was a feather plucker, but stopped yhen started again when Trip passed. She has a bumble bee bird onsie to help keep her warm & to prvent plucking. Getting better! She mumbles, but does have a vocab. FU is said, but under her breath & only said to her food. No idea, so please don't ask lol. She says Jack Trip, which is rough for me. You, as in, hey you! Here kitty, kitty, kitty! No, no, no. Mimics the phone, so we changed the ringtone to Beethoven to make her stop. Barks like a dog, wolf whistles. But my favorite is during breakfast she runs in circles while screaming scramby eggs, no juice!  Then of course when I serve the scramby eggs she gets serious & says fu while eating the eggs! I think she knows more words, but only uses them when she mumbles. Oh & she just started to say goat, but instead says got or oats. She'll get it soon enough & will then call everything a goat until she gets bored of it. She loves to laugh & dances. We are doing flight recall training & hopefully by next summer she will be doing it outside!!

I fostered a few birds, but she is my only one right now. Looking for another, specifically a lorikeet, but a decent breeder isn't real easy to find here in the states.

Love your budgie story!!! They do not get enough respect.they are very smart & can be amazing talkers!

If you are interested in a bird & are not too experienced I would suggest another budgie or cockatiel or a lovebird. Good beginner birds. Hearty, small & less destructive. Larger birds have very long life spans. Boobo is in my will, because she will no doubt outlive me. Owning any bird is like having a perpetual toddler. They are extremely social, loud & messy! Whatever you decide please do as much research as possible. Personality, diet, care, life expectancy, flight, cage & health. I would not suggest a rescue, because most have health or behavioral issues & are hard to get back in shape. I am looking for a rescue or a breeder, but I know that with a rescue I may be in for heartbreak, especially if it has been on a poor diet(seedaholic). Beware of give aways or cheap prices. Those are usually horrible breeders, smuggled or neglected birds & purchasing only continues the process. Oh & be prepared, because you will become a crazy bird owner. We are nutty, but unique!

Re: Cheeky Cockatoo!

Thanks for taking time to post all that great advice. I would love to get a Budgie again. He wasn't very noisy as I recall -- that is the only objection my hubby has. He probably would flip out if one of our pets was running around the kitchen yelling "Scramby eggs, no juice!" <-----that must be hilarious btw!

I am going to read up on them before I mention it to any short people who live with me. We just got a dog that we're integrating so I guess I should wait a few months....or weeks.

Re: Cheeky Cockatoo!

I was going to post the video of the hoarding, but it is just too graphic & heartbreaking. This is Boobo when she was first found in the hoarding house.

A year later!

Re: Cheeky Cockatoo!

That pic does not even come close to showing just how horrendous & tragic the situation was. Again, waaay too graphic. I wanted to adopt them all, including the 2 deformed budgies. One had mites & was unable to be saved & the other one has a birth deformity where the legs are splayed far apart causing her to not be able to hold herself up or walk. She is doing much better, but will always have problems.

Re: Cheeky Cockatoo!

Hello!

Pet story to share;

While at the dog park yesterday this cute lab came up to me while I was sitting on a bench for some petting and before I knew it she grabbed my cell phone and just took off with it securely in her mouth. Myself, the dog's owner and several others chased her around the park trying to retrieve my phone. We even tried calling my phone and when it rang she stopped for a second but would not give up the phone. The dog's owner kept saying that she had a fetish for cell phones but never damages them smile emoticon. After about 45 minutes of chasing one guy was finally able to grab ahold of her and get the phone out of her mouth. In spite of the owner's claim that she never damages the cell phones, she steals for fun, my phone screen was completely shattered. We all concluded that she likely bit down HARD as we were chasing her. The dog's owner took full responsibility for the replacement cost so all ended well. This was by far one of the funniest experiences ever! Just wish there was video to capture several adults chasing a dog with my cell phone hanging out of her mouth, not to mention the smile on her face as she enjoyed the mayhem she caused!! Gotta love them!
