Saturday August 6th

Good morning everyone.

I just found out last night that there is a Black Lives Matter march going on today that will be going right down my street. I live on the main st (Broadway) in my town (Merrillville).  The march starts about 20 blocks north of me & ends in front of the police station about 10 blocks past my house.  I looked on their FB page and it says a peaceful demonstration. I am pretty excited. I am hoping they are working in conjunction with the police & when they meet at the Police Station, that there will be words of unity & working together to make things better for all.

Any way I have invited a few friends over to show our support for BLM.  We are making signs & everything.  I just hope everything remains peaceful.  It only takes one jerk to ruin a peaceful protest.

I will let you know how it goes. My inner hippie is very excited.

Re: Saturday August 6th

Hi Spunky!

Well the march turned out to be a bit of a bust.

It seems this particular march was by some students (HS?)  and was not very well organized. There were about 20 people maybe. When they passed my house, they were saying things a little too strongly against the police.  We kind of felt it wasn't in our best interest to join in the march to the Police Station.  So we just raised our signs & cheered for them.  It made them happy.

I guess we were looking for more of a peaceful march to join with the police, not against them.  Where we live the Police are pretty fair IMO. (which I did wonder why they chose to protest here, since we don't really have any race issues).  I guess it was because they are young & wanted to support BLM. That's fine for them but we did not want to cause any problems with our local officers. We felt that would not be in our best interest.

We had fun anyway, making our signs and discussing our thoughts about the movement.

Good day all around.

OH brother...just crazy kids that don't understand that its NOT always against the police, or just trying to get in the news....But glad you are ok.

I would have been afraid to show them any signs...they may have misunderstood and thought you were encouraging them to rant AGAINST the police.. Glad its over

Re: Saturday August 6th

Well, my sign said Black Lives Matter with a big old peace sign.

I think if we had had time to check the whole thing out beforehand we might have been able to direct them in a more positive direction.  They were young & full of bravado.   They just had lack of leadership, I think. Hopefully, the police were open to discussion. I think talking about the issues is a good start.

I agree...they have to start talking to each other, instead of shooting at each other....and I am hopeful that clearer heads will prevail.
