Whoopie's thoughts on health insurance...

Quite often when there is a discussion about health insurance on the show, she'll say something to the effect that she's a healthy person and if she doesn't use her insurance she should get money back.

I have to wonder if any of the panel understand that insurance is not a savings account because no one sets her straight on this.  Don't they understand that rates are based on the whole pool of people insured--healthy and unhealthy?  So, I am relatively healthy person but I know that insurance is basically a gamble.  The insurance companies hope I don't get sick so my premiums can be used to pay claims for people who aren't as fortunate.   It works the same way with auto insurance, home insurance, etc.

If insurance companies set rates based on healthy people getting their money back and unhealthy people getting their claims paid, the rates would be sky high for everyone.

Re: Whoopie's thoughts on health insurance...

I didn't watch the show today, but I have heard her say that....I think she knows that's NOT how it works...

She should just be thankful that she is healthy and hopefully that won't change for her.  And, at least she has adequate insurance to cover her illness.  Many people are NOT as fortunate.

And yes....if it were to work that way...the rates would be sky high for everyone.

Since she doesn't need that much insurance, perhaps they should lower her insurance rate. All it would take is a phone call to her Insurance carrier and ask.
