What Work Does the Clinton Foundation Do?

Although the foundation has a wide array of initiatives — promoting economic equality for women, boosting entrepreneurship in emerging markets and tackling climate change — it is perhaps best known for its health care initiatives.

It has several separate entities through which it deploys its health programs, including the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI).

Established as part of the Foundation in 2005, CGI essentially acts as a launching pad for programs by bringing together a variety of stakeholders, including NGOs, executives, entrepreneurs, politicians, and others, who then commit to various ambitious projects. CGI doesn’t actually implement those projects itself—rather, it says it serves as a “catalyst for action.”

For instance, in 2015, as a participant in CGI’s events, the infant and maternal health group Embrace Innovations pledged to bring its innovative Embrace infant warmer (which doesn’t require a fixed electricity source) to 100,000 babies in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.

So, where does one find information on who exactly benefits from the Trump foundation?

On October 3, the office of New York attorney general Eric T. Schneiderman ordered Donald Trump’s personal charity to cease fundraising in New York state immediately; The Foundation had been violating state law by soliciting donations without proper authorization.

At this point, I’d like to point out that the Clinton Foundation, which has helped reduce poverty and improve the health of thousands of people across the globe, has virtually nothing in common with the Trump Foundation.

Records show that from 2009 to 2014, the Trump Foundation raised $4.36 million, of which $2.5 million was from New Yorkers.

State rules require nonprofits raising more than $25,000 a year in New York to register and file audited financial statements and annual financial reports to the attorney general’s charities bureau.

Since the Trump Foundation has not complied with this requirement, Schneiderman’s office notified Trump that he must provide those financial documents within 15 days.

This got me thinking: What exactly is the Trump Foundation? I discovered that it is managed by Trump and his children Ivanka, Eric and Donald Jr., but they only spend half an hour a week working on it. 

Here are some true facts about the organization I was able to uncover. (Unlike the fervid declarations of the Republican nominee for President, these actually are accurate.)

4. Trump Foundation Money Has Been Used for Political PurposesThe Foundation does make a few dozen donations annually, in amounts usually ranging from $1,000 to $50,000. Since around 2005, the money for these gifts has come primarily from Trump’s friends and associates, mostly in return for favors granted. The Foundation gives money, for example, to charities that rent Trump’s ballrooms. Comedy Central gave $400,000 to the Foundation after Trump appeared on one of their celebrity roasts, and People Magazine donated $150,000 after Trump gave them rights to publish photos of his son Barron.

Trump bought a 6-foot-tall portrait of himself with charity money.





The Trump Foundation is clearly not a charitable organization, as other foundations are.

Accusations against Trump and his foundation include the following:

Solicitation of donations without a licenseUnder New York State law, a not-for-profit foundation must register as a "7A Charitable Organization" if it plans to solicit outside donations in excess of $25,000 in any year.[33]

The Trump Foundation was initially registered as a private foundation set up solely to receive his own personal donations.

As long as it was registered as a private foundation and not soliciting outside funds, it did not have to file annual audited reports with the New York State Charities Bureau[33]

Delay in granting donations solicited for veterans organizations' benefit

In April 2016, Fox News reported that, more than two months after Trump said he had raised $6 million for military veterans at a pre-Iowa caucus fundraiser, "most of the organizations targeted to receive the money have gotten less than half of that amount."[35]

Grants to the National Museum of Catholic Art and Library

In each of 1995 and 1999, the Trump Foundation granted $50,000 to the National Museum of Catholic Art and Library. A 2001 report by The Village Voice stated, after visiting the museum in East Harlem, that the facility had "next to no art" and no official connection to the Catholic church, despite having had a 10-year track record of soliciting large-scale donations for its collection.

The Voice and, later, The Washington Post, concluded that Trump may have directed the grants to the museum to curry favor with the museum's then chairman, Eddie Malloy, who was also head of the Building and Construction Trades Council of Greater New York.
