The Kindness of Strangers

I'm reading a book called The Kindness of Strangers.  Its a compilation of stories from various authors of times that they have been on the receiving end of acts of kindness from complete strangers.  I'm sure we've all been the recipient of totally unexpected acts of kindness from people that we've never met and who we'll never see again.  Let's tell our stories...in the current atmosphere of growing hate which starts from our national leader,  I'm sure we can appreciate some stories of kindness.

Re: The Kindness of Strangers

here's one of my stories:
a number of years ago I had a business meeting in a city about and hour and a half away.  This was before GPS and cell phones.  As luck would have it, I got lost.  I stopped to ask directions at a hotel, then found a pay phone around the corner from the lobby to call my contact to let them know I was on my way but would be just a little late.  On my way home from the meeting, I stopped at a few farm markets, but didn't buy anything.  I stopped at the Burger King drive thru to get a bite to eat as it was getting late in the day.  When I pulled up to the window to pay I discovered my wallet was gone!  Not on my seat, not under the seat...nowhere!  All I could do was try to back track to all my stops.   Eventually, I wound up at the hotel where I had made the call that morning...and also where I last remembered having my wallet.  Lo and behold...my wallet had been turned in to the desk--with all my cash and credit cards still in it!  They hadn't gotten any contact information for the person who had found it, so I wasn't able to thank them.

Fast forward 3 months.  I stopped at the gas station to get gas and like a fool, set my wallet on top of the car.  Of course, when I finished pumping gas, I just replaced the gas cap, walked around the car and got in.  Needless to say, when I got to the grocery store across the street I discovered my wallet was gone and realized what I had done!  I back tracked, but couldn't find it any where.  So, all I could do was drive home.  When I got there I was surprised to find out that a woman had seen my wallet in the street, stopped her car, got out, picked it up and drove to my house with it.  Once again, with all my cash and credit cards in it! She gave it to my husband and had just left before I got there.  Luckily, she left her name and address so I was able to send her a thank you gift!

Re: The Kindness of Strangers

Well my story is not about my wallet being returned...that's really great! cossysmom!! but about my 'cell phone' being returned to me...

On a recent trip to my bank, I was on my cell phone as I walked in to do my banking....after finishing my call and saying Hi to two of my friends that work there, I proceeded to do my banking, not realizing that I had put my phone down on the table, and not back into my bag as I usually do.

I finished my banking, and left the bank.....my cell phone still on the table....Before heading home, I did some shopping and when I arrived home...I had 2 missed calls on my landline...my caller ID indicated that they were both from my cell phone!! ...What???  VERY creepy.....I searched my bag and low and behold I was missing my phone.

I called my cell phone and a woman answered....apparently she had scrolled my numbers on my cell phone and found the number that indicated "home"....
I asked her if she had my cellphone and she replied that YES that she had it and had found it at the bank....

She agreed to meet me at my favorite place...Dunkin Donuts and told me what color jacket she had on so I would be able to identify her....I met up with her and thanked her profusely for returning my phone....I paid for her snack and coffee and since then we have met there on a regular basis....The best is that now I have made a 'new' friend....and I love her! And that I got my phone back!!

Re: The Kindness of Strangers

that's a great one Spunky!  Almost the same thing happened to someone I know!

here's one that happened to me years ago and I always try to "pay it forward."

I ran into the grocery store to pick up just one or two things.  Didn't take a cart or basket.  As it always turns out, I picked up a few more things "while I was there."  I hopped in line with my arms full and as luck would have it, wound up in line behind someone with an overflowing cart.  They turned around and noticed me with my arms awkwardly full and offered to let me go in front of them.  Now, whenever I'm in line and the person behind me has just a few things, I let them go first.  Such a simple and effortless way to make someone's day!

There are such wonderful people in this world!  Great stories, heartwarming to know how many great people there are, the news gets you down, sometimes we forget.
