California's new pet store law

California is prohibiting the sale of dogs, cats and rabbits in pet stores unless they're from a rescue organization.  It's a law that's supposed to crack down on puppy mills.  The pet shops have to keep records documenting the source of each dog, cat or rabbit that they sell.  It sounds good on the surface, I can see where things could go very wrong,  falsifying records, pets disappearing.   If you wanted a rescue pet, wouldn't it be better to just go to the shelter in the first place?  At least they're trying to crack down on the puppy mills, hope this is the way to accomplish it.

Re: California's new pet store law

I'm not sure how it's supposed to work in CA but I know some of the large pet store chains, like Petco, bring the rescue groups in with their animals for adoption events.  So the customer is dealing directly with the rescue organization, not the store.  I got my dog this way.

Re: California's new pet store law

I hate the thought of anyone buying a pet from a puppy mill. Those poor dogs are kept in cages and then thrown out like garbage. I'm pleased to know that stores like Petco are working along side animal rescue groups to find homes for our furry friends.
