renewing US passport

It's time to renew my passport.  The process, if you meet certain qualifications and can renew thru the mail, is that you fill out the paperwork, send it, your payment and your current passport to be renewed.  It then takes 4-6 weeks to get the new passport.  In those 4-6 weeks, you're without your passport.  What if you need it during that time?  I don't anticipate that happening, but I'm sure there are people that would have a problem being without their passport for that length of time.  Doesn't seem to be the best way to go about this renewal.

Re: renewing US passport

I think you can get it done faster at your local Post Office...call them first to see if they do it....because not all Post offices do it.....and ask them what you need to bring in as proof of who you are...

We went through the post office a few years ago, I don't think it was much faster.

Re: renewing US passport

I'll have to check out the post office option.  I don't really want to send my passport off to be out of my hands for a few weeks.   Thanks!

Re: renewing US passport

There are places you can go to get it renewed right away.....next day or two. I know there is a place in Manhattan and another in Stamford, CT.....you will pay more.
