Thursday, March 14

Good Morning Plan B....It's overcast this morning with quite a bit of fog.  I think the sun's supposed to make an appearance, with temperature in the forties.  Hope everyone has the weather they enjoy!  Another weekend is around the corner!

Good morning Tel. No sun here. It's cool but not as cold as it has been. I was supposed to have an opthamologist app today, but the person who does the eye tests is sick so I have another appointment in April.
The dog has been sick since yesterday. She has thrown up on the sofa, the stairs, the kitchen floor.....and last night she got sick on the bed.......yuck! Poor baby!

Re: Thursday, March 14

Hello to all. Here’s wishing you a great day. It’s sunny and warm in NY today.
So teloug....
I listen to NPR and they were playing a recording  of a guy reading his poem about living in NE and how the squirrels are growing in population because of an over abundance of acorns.....that there are so many of them. They call it Squirrel-NATO. Lol. They run all over the place. Wild.
Maybe it’s an old poem from last spring because it doesn’t sound very spring-like where you are. Forgive....are you in New Hamshire or Vermont?

BTW.....that turkey story was funny.

Re: Thursday, March 14

zeke, I live in Vermont.  We have our fair share of squirrels around for whatever reason, I've never known oak trees, with their acorns, to be in abundance in the state though, I can't even think of one in my town anywhere.  They tend to keep their leaves in the winter, they turn brown, so they kind of stick out.  We do have a lot of other kinds of nuts in town though!    Surrounding towns have large gray squirrels, the only time I've seen them in this town was when one is flattened in the middle of the road, they make it all the way to town,  see how much snow we've got and throw themselves under a vehicle.  Once in a while you'll see someone driving around with a sticker on their car that says, "Loons, taste just like chicken."  (It's an inside joke meant to p_ss some people off), I've never seen one saying how good a gray squirrel tastes, but it could also explain why there aren't too many of them around.    I usually have a few red squirrels here, but I've noticed bobcat tracks out in the yard, not a good sign for any small animal!   Love those turkeys!  They were back at the neighbors tonight when we went by, so funny.

Re: Thursday, March 14

Well....we never had turkeys where I live but we do now. In fact there is an area called Turkey Hill which used to be a unique experience but now one may see turkeys anywhere around here. And some are huge. There are lots of squirrels, too, but not like what was described in the poem. No squirrel-NATO. There are the most beautiful black squirrels and their numbers seem to be growing. I have seen redish brown squirrels in the city and white squirrels in Wash, DC.
So do you hear loons often? It's a lovely sound. I heard one once when I was in upstate NY, rowing on a lake. Never saw the loon but we could hear it. Beautiful.
How about mooses? moosi? moosies?  what is the plural of moose?

Re: Thursday, March 14

We hear and see loons all summer, we usually have two sets on the lake with their babies.  An area around the island is roped off so that boats will stay away from their nests.  We do have moose.  (I think moose is singular and plural?)  When I was a teenager, they were so rare that when one was spotted a few miles out of town everyone ended up going there to see it.  Now they're everywhere, causing a hazard for drivers.  One spent the night in our yard once, my husband had to scare it off so he could go to work.  They leave quite a mess behind.  I never saw a turkey until maybe ten years ago, now they're everywhere too.  There was a huge male outside once with his tail all spread out trying to impress a partridge that was walking around, he was obviously a very confused turkey!   Our house has woods on three sides, so we see a lot of animals.  We used to have a lot of rabbits, but I haven't seen one in a very long time.  I've never seen a black or white squirrel, we had a white weasel out at the bird feeder once, I sort of screamed a little when I saw it, by the look on his face, I think he felt like screaming too.

Re: Thursday, March 14

I scream if I see an opossum. They're not the cutest things around. I actually saw a turkey spread eagle like a peacock! It was amazing. I was driving down the Saw Mill River Pkwy. They like to hang out right near the edge of the road. Bobcats. Not common around here but there have been sightings. Hell.....there are coyotes in NYC. Climate change and development into "their" areas are forcing animals out of their own communities and into ours.
