Disney Accused of 'whitewashing' its 'troubling past'

for Omitting Racially Insensitive Classics from Streaming Service.

Disney+
promises to be the hub for the iconic brand’s past and present on-demand content — but not all oldies will be streaming.
The 1946 film Song of the South will not be offered on the $7-per-month service and the Jim Crow scene in 1941’s Dumbo will be edited out, Boardwalk Times reports and The Hollywood Reporter confirms. That’s because both have been deemed racist — Song of the South for its portrayal of African-Americans working on a plantation and serving their white masters and the Doo-wop singing crows, one of which was actually named Jim Crow, a reference to the racist laws that allowed segregation.

(Image: Disney)Disney’s stance on both of these has been clear. While Song of the South inspired the Disneyland ride Splash Mountain, it was taken out of circulation and never released on home video in the U.S. Disney CEO Bob Iger addressed the decision in 2011, saying, “It was made in a different time... I just felt that there are elements to the film, while it was a relatively good film, that wouldn’t necessarily sit right or feel right to a number of people today.” And while the company could profit from the film’s release, he added, “Sometimes you make sacrifices on the financial side to do what you believe is right.”https://img.huffingtonpost.com/asset/5cc09d3d2300008903eb06eb.jpeg" style="max-width:100%;">The crow scene is the most notorious part of the animated Dumbo. (Photo: Everett Collection)In Dumbo’s recent live-action remake with Tim Burton at the helm, the crow scene was completely deleted, explaining it was the “animated equivalent of performing in blackface.”
The reaction to this decision has been controversial for a litany of reasons. First, of course, some people don’t think it’s fair that Disney is throwing away history — despite the fact that it’s clearly offensive.

Any opinions? I feel there is a loss to erasing history. Tearing down statues, omitting original songs and movies.....
I knew someone who wanted to change the title from Negro Spirituals to African American Spirituals. All of these things can have explanations/clarifications...not omissions. It makes people ignorant about actual events and therefore may be denied.
Each case probably begs its own discussion.

Sorry pictures didn't come out.

Re: Disney Accused of 'whitewashing' its 'troubling past'

It doesn't bother me in the least that Song Of The South won't be included in the Disney+ line up. I wouldn't want my granddaughters thinking slavery or bigotry was OK. I know they're are good parts of that movie, but like that CEO said, "sometimes you make sacrifices on the financial side to do what you believe is right." And I absolutely love the Splash Mountain ride at Disney World.

As for the tearing down of confederate statues or even the Kate Smith statue.....don't destroy them. Put them in a museum and erect signage explaining why they were removed from the public. Make it a teaching moment.

We mostly agree. I think that destroying history allows us to forget the horrors committed. History is history. But I am glad Kate Smith's Star Spangled Banner will be sung by another. She had her day.

I agree.....we should not destroy history because then people will forget. Look at the past to learn valuable lessons.

I never liked Kate Smith's voice, even when I was a little kid, so I'm glad someone else will be singing the Star Spangled Banner. Maybe the reigns shouldn't be handed over to a single artist though.
