The relationship between rump and his father, a first generation son of German immigrants, has always been a complicated and defining element of his public and private personas.

Upon taking office, a black and white framed photograph of Fred Trump was the first -- and for a while, the only -- personal item Trump placed in the Oval Office behind the Resolute Desk (he has since added photos of his mother and wife).

Yet in his later life, she writes, Fred Trump was hardly repaid in kindness by the son he created and whose career he made possible.

Instead, Mary Trump describes her uncle Donald treating his father with contempt as his Alzheimer's disease progressed.
 

She also writes that Trump's father, Fred Trump, "dismantled his oldest son," Freddy Trump, Mary's father and Trump's brother.

"The only reason Donald escaped the same fate is that his personality served his father's purpose.

That's what sociopaths do: they co-opt others and use them toward their own ends--ruthlessly and efficiently, with no tolerance for dissent or resistance," Mary Trump writes.

She writes at length about how she sees Trump, comparing him to a three-year-old, saying he "knows he has never been loved" and arguing that Trump's "ego is a fragile thing that must be bolstered every moment because he knows deep down that he is nothing of what he claims to be."

Her book "Too Much and Never Enough" has now surpassed "The Room Where It Happened" to be the No. 1 nonfiction seller of the year on Amazon's list.

 But right now she is barred from giving any interviews or otherwise speaking publicly, since the restraining order sought by rump's brother Robert is still in place.

The judge overseeing the case is expected to issue a ruling sometime on Monday. Maybe she will be able to speak on publication day.

Mary Trump's memoir sold 950,000 copies on its first day.!

Rachel Maddow asked if she ever heard her uncle, the president, use racist or anti-Semitic slurs.

"Oh, yeah, of course I did," Mary Trump said. "And I don't think that should surprise anybody given how virulently racist he is today.

"Maddow again asked Mary Trump if she specifically heard Mr. Trump use the N-word and anti-Semitic slurs. She responded "yes" to both.
