Missing Florida Woman on Phone with Husband as Building Came Down

A woman, among those missing from the Champlain Towers South collapse, was on the phone with her husband moments after an outdoor swimming pool caved and then the line went dead.

Rescuers did not immediately find Cassondra “Cassie” Billedeau-Stratton, 40, who was staying on the fourth floor of the doomed Surfside, Florida condo complex, when she frantically called her husband and described the massive sink hole beneath their fourth-floor unit that had once been the building's swimming pool.

“It was 1:30 a.m., I’ll never, never forget that,” husband Mike Stratton told the Miami Herald.

Stratton is a prominent Democratic political consultant and the couple is based in Colorado but they spent much of the pandemic quarantined at their Surfside condo, The Times-Picayune and The New Orleans Advocate reported.

Stratton last saw his wife, a native of Kenner, Louisiana, on Monday of last week when he left south Florida for a business trip to Washington, D.C.

Re: Missing Florida Woman on Phone with Husband as Building Came Down

As the agonizing wait continues for relatives of those missing in the collapse of a 12-story beachfront condo in Surfside, Fla., the mayor of the tight-knit community just north of Miami on Monday relayed what he described as a “personal” anecdote of one of those families.

Speaking at a press conference, Surfside Mayor Charles Burkett said he was touring the site of the collapsed building on Sunday night when he came across a young girl sitting in a chair by herself, looking at her phone.

Burkett said he recognized the girl, one of whose parents live in the building. “I knelt down and asked her, I said, "So what are you doing? Are you OK?’” the mayor recalled.

The girl, he said, was reading a Jewish prayer to herself “presumably by where one of her parents is.”

“That really brought it home to me,” Burkett said. “She wasn’t crying. She was just lost. She didn’t know what to do, what to say, who to talk to.”

Hard to read but maybe sending positive thoughts, prayers, might make a difference.....
