Biden says US set to complete war in Afghanistan by August 31

He also added that :"It's up to 'the Afghan people alone to decide their future"

President Joe Biden today stood by his decision to end the war in Afghanistan, insisting no amount of sustained American presence there could resolve the country's own intractable problems.

Speaking as a near-complete withdrawal of American troops coincides with major Taliban gains, Biden grew defensive when pressed on the likelihood of a total Taliban takeover.

He said it was now up to the Afghans to defend their country. And he insisted there was nothing more the United States could do after two decades of war.

Less than a month after two passenger jets commandeered by hijackers brought down New York's World Trade Center, with a third hitting the Pentagon and another crashing into a field in Pennsylvania on September 11, 2001, US forces began an attack that would soon topple the Taliban regime in Afghanistan, which had harbored Osama bin Laden's terror campaign.

We've been there long enough....The withdrawal has proceeded quickly after Biden announced in April he would wind down America's presence in Afghanistan by September 11, the 20th anniversary of the terror attacks that prompted the war.

Re: Biden says US set to complete war in Afghanistan by August 31

Today President Biden defended the pulling of US troops out of Afghanistan, as it is believed, by many, that the Taliban is advancing: 'We did not go to Afghanistan to nation-build'.

What do you guys think about the withdrawal of some of our trrops?

Re: Biden says US set to complete war in Afghanistan by August 31

About 650 U.S. troops are expected to remain in Afghanistan to provide security for diplomats after the main American military force completes its withdrawal, which is set to be largely done in the next two weeks, U.S. officials said.

In addition, several hundred additional American forces will remain at the Kabul airport, potentially until September, to assist Turkish troops providing security, as a temporary move until a more formal Turkey-led security operation is in place, the officials said.
