Aggressive food behavior

My daughter adopted a puppy a couple of months ago.  He's now about 14 wks old.   He is exhibiting food aggression.  If you go near him while eating he starts growling.  We've never had issues like this with our shepherds or malinois.  We have tried keeping our hands in his dish while feeding him, take it away when he starts growling along with telling him NO, and hand feeding too.

Any suggestions on how to deal with this very annoying problem?  The shelter said he's a shepherd mix, but I think he has some golden in him, and is otherwise sweet tempered.

Vantro....Help!..my lawn person  came yesterday, and advised us that we have moles...she said she will sprinkle some pellets on the ground to help get rid of them...I asked if they would be harmful to dogs           (since I babysit for my sons dog while he is at work) and she said "I dont THINK so.....I asked her to hold off until she finds out or I get more information...
What do you think??

It really depends on the exact product they are using. Most pellets are not repellent, but poison & will harm all animals if enough is ingested. There are natural, humane or poison alternatives that you can google to decide the best route for you. I remove moles in my yard by tracking their trail, repositioning the grass in the trail as I go. Moles cannot see where they are going & generations depend on old trails. If I actually see grass moving I get a shovel & about an inch back from the movement I jam the shovel in as deep as I can. It traps the mole allowing me to dig it out & relocate it. I don't expect most ppl would choose to this, but with all my animals I don't use poison, nor do I want to kill anything.

Re: Aggressive food behavior

This category should have been named "Ask Vantro". LOL.

With so many animal lovers on this board it's great that we have someone with expertise and experience on this stuff.

Vantro (ask Vantro),
My little rescue Molly (2 1/2 yo 8 pound chihuahua mix) is the most picky eater ever. I make her food, chicken or beef mixed with carrots, green beans, sweet potatoes and dry dog food. I fill her bowl every morning but she does not eat unitil nightime, and only one bowl. We wake up in the morning and her bowl is empty.
We do give her a snack or two during the day but only tiny peanut butter/yogurt meatballs I make. I worry that she is not eating enough but my vet says she is at the best weight. Why is it that she only eats one bowl of homeade food at night?

Hi Spunky!  We use Caster Oil pellets on the perimeter of our lawn.,  If there's a mole in the county, it finds its way to our house.   We also use traps.  These pesky little rats  do all sorts of damage to the grass and flower beds.  The pellets have diminished in numbers but a few remain. I hope you find something that works.

If your vet says that she is at a healthy weight then no worries. Many dogs, especially the larger slower breeds eat once a day. My chowfoundland ate once a day at 6p.m. Keep up the treats, because an empty stomach can cause her to vomit, but if she doesn't want her food in the morning then that is fine. You have no idea how many dogs give us a hard time eating, especially labradoodles & small dogs. Some of them won't eat hardly at all. One of the labradoodles will go 2 days before he eats, even when he is at home! When did dogs get so picky? When I was growing up I had to watch that my dogs didn't steal the food out my hand & sometimes it wasn't even food! Anyway, she will be fine. Just keep an eye on her weight. If she starts to lose maybe increase the dry food a little & give an extra treat.
