Mr. President........you lie! Two years ago you promised no boots on the ground in Syria.
Gee, it's a good thing he got that peace prize before he actually started doing anything, eh?
Gotta wonder if Code Pink is going to organize huge protests and if the mainstream media will cover the protests............not bloody likely!

"Boots" refers to your rank and file 11B and other general combat troops. US is deploying special forces to Syria, which aren't considered boots on the ground. The US has special forces in what, almost 80 countries? But they're not considered "boots on the ground", because of who they are and what they're doing, which is almost always training local soldiers. In this case, they'll likely be training certain Kurdish groups, as well as being used on clandestine raids and hits on key targets.

"US troops have entered Syria previously for one-off interventions, but this marks the first proper deployment."
Shiny, you have to admit this marks an escalation of US involvement in Syria. And those troops he's sending in are going to be at risk from Russian airstrikes and that would be a disaster.
Obama 2013......." I will not put boots on the ground in Syria." So, was he lying then too?

He wasn't lying. Sometimes situations change and so the approach has to change as well. I think it is good that President Obama can be flexible and change his mind when it becomes necessary or warranted.

It marks an increase for sure. A lot has changed in two years, I believe he meant what he said in 2013 and he realizes that the playing field is different now, so he will have to alter his strategy accordingly. I'm very glad he's willing to consider new options when something isn't working. Too many politicians just keep banging their heads on the wall and refuse to admit that their strategy needs to be tweaked and maybe re-thought altogether.

I'm glad Obama realized he was wrong in thinking he didn't have to use troops on the ground. Although I hate that term because there already was troops on the ground for some time.
It is true that with every conflict the situation has to be reevaluated, like during the Irag war when they decided on the troop surge.

Oh please, do you really want to go there?
Presidents lying?
Remember when we were told by the Bush adminstration that the Iraqis would be dancing in the streets hailing us as liberators?
Rumsfeld: "Five days or five weeks or five months, but it certainly isn't going to last any longer than that," he said. "It won't be a World War III."
Say what you want about Obama, he hates war and never wanted to be a wartime president, but he inherited Bush's wars.
A true leader makes decisions based on reality and not on false information as Tony Blair has finally admitted and GW and Cheney have yet to do.

true that US specal forces is in about 80 countries and are not really combat troops or considered boots on the ground, but I think a lot of Ppl do see them as boots on the ground, but why no one is talking about the other countries that special forces are in.

That's what I've read too. About 50 of our special forces will be sent there to train the Kurdish groups..Josh Earnest said" "The President does expect that they can have an impact in intensifying our strategy for building the capacity of local forces inside of Syria for taking the fight on the ground to ISIL in their own country,"Earnest said that this key element of U.S. strategy in confronting ISIS hasn't changed with Friday's announcement. He was also careful to insist: "These forces do not have a combat mission."
One of the problems I have though....The Kurdish army and people have been at war it seems like forever...they should know how to fight their own battles by now. Why do WE have to teach them HOW to fight. I'm so tired of war...smh
