I think I've only seen this show twice but I saw that Penn Gillette and Judy Gold were going to be on so I thought I would give it a try.
First, although I knew that Penn Gillette is an atheist, I didn't realize how intolerable he is to any religion at all. Judy Gold's partner (sorry I don't know her name) is Jewish and she attempted to have a Shabbat dinner at Penn's home. Both he and his children were totally disrespectful as she was reciting a prayer. The children talked and laughed throughout the prayer and Penn did nothing to correct them. I must admit she handled it gracefully. I don't see why it's so difficult to be respectful of someone's religion even if you don't have the same beliefs.
The celebrities only spend a week in their swap. So they live by the rules of the home for about a day, it seems, and then they turn the tables and have the host family live by their rules. Two things bothered me.
First, Judy Gold and her partner live in a small two bedroom NYC apartment with two sons. Where did Penn's wife sleep? I assume she was at a hotel near by. Part of the premise of this show is that the guest "wife" lives with the host family. So, clearly, that isn't true.
Second, Judy is forced to do work (writing, business calls, etc) in a small corner of a small living room. The boys constantly have friends visiting and chaos surrounds her. Penn's wife create an office in Judy's bedroom for her. There was a Murphy bed installed behind book cases and some sort of fold away desk. All this was done in a matter of a day without Judy's knowledge. Hard to believe.
Just goes to show clearly that these "reality" shows are staged.

I sometimes watch this show. I used to watch the original wife swap shows too. They were done with regular non famous people. The celebrity wife swap shows are much tamer than the wife swap shows were. I was always amazed at what the visiting wife was allowed to do when it was time to live with her rules. Taking kids out of school, destroying or disposing of belongings, getting rid of pets, etc were all things that happened. I often felt they went too far. And the fighting between the visiting wife and the husband was terrible at times. Celebrity husbands are much more willing to go along with the changes and Celebrity wife swap always seems to have a happy ending. Wasn't always that way with Wife Swap with regular people.

I agree with you that celebrity wife swap has a happy ending. I think that's because it's more scripted and I'm sure the celebs have it in their contract that they will not be shown in a negative light. They're doing the show for publicity.
One last thought, Penn Gillette made some kind of comment about how he was proud that his children had no concept of "religion." I found that to be sad. I'm ok with those who are atheist and ok with them raising their children that way. But why wouldn't you be open minded enough to expose your children to other ways of thinking. Explain that other people believe this way and this is why we believe what we do. I'm a Christian and my son attended Christian school but we've had many discussions about other religions and other ways of life. And I might add, those discussions were never "we're right and they're wrong" discussions.
I have to wonder if Penn is afraid that if his children are exposed to religion that they will start to believe in God.
And, don't his children have any friends?? Do they go to school??

He is proud of his children not knowing religion. He did not say belief or a god. Many ppl, including some believers admonish religions for many reasons. Many horrible things happen in the name of religion. Beliefs in a god hurts no one, but the same cannot be said for religious dogma.
You ask about his children & friends, are you suggesting that they pretend to believe in a god just to have friends? That they should be something they are not just to make others happy & comfortable? I don't think that is fair to the children or the religion. Are Jews, Muslims, Buddhist etc also to pretend to be Christian just to fit in?
His children know religion, he meant they do not know the concept of the belief in religion. I agree. I know the fear of a god & not believing in him. It was last thread to my Christianity. I am a proud atheist & I see no issue with expressing it. Christians do it all the time while finding atheist to be sad or lacking. Penn is the other side of that same coin.

He said he was proud that his children had no concept of religion.
They were totally disrespectful of Judy's partner's religion. Whether you believe or don't in a religion or God or anything else, there is no reason to be rude about it. He can teach his children that other people believe in different things than we do and just as we expect respect for what we believe, we need to show respect for others beliefs.
I wasn't clear on my question about whether his children go to school or have friends. If they do, I would assume they are exposed to people who don't think like they do.
Intolerance is what's causing most of the problems in this world
